GridON is a leading provider of Fault Current Limiting solutions for increased capacity in electricity networks and cost-effective connection of distributed generation and renewable energy sources. GridON provides fault mitigation solutions for network operators, independent power producers, and industrial customers.  

GridON enables the ever-growing demand for electricity consumption, while improving energy efficiency and network stability, and reducing carbon emissions. Short circuit surge currents in electricity grids are creeping up with increased supply on meshed networks, often exceeding switchgear ratings. Cascading fault currents result in supply disruptions, equipment damage and severe power outages. Grid operators are forced to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in order to prevent catastrophic consequences. Conventional solutions such as grid segmentation and costly upgrades negatively impact the power quality, stability and reliability of supply.

The ever increasing penetration of Distributed Generation (DG) has led to rising fault levels, challenging the fault capacity of existing equipment, and poses challenges to both network operators and Independent Power Producers (IPPs). In order to enable a scalable and long term path for such connections, the fault current contribution from new generators needs to be reduced to near zero. Consequently, connection requests by IPPs are often rejected by grid operators due to lack of fault current headroom in their networks. In some cases, connections are made possible through conventional resource-intensive and often disruptive network reinforcement, with substantial cost and delays to the IPPs. This leaves available generation capacity underutilized, thus inhibiting improvements in network capacity and flexibility and energy source diversification.

Energy intensive industries - such as chemical processing, steel, cement, data centers, mining, oil & gas, and water desalination - rely on uninterrupted operation and are extremely sensitive to electricity disruptions, which may often lead to severe business impact and financial losses.

GridON is offering grid operators, independent power producers (IPP) and industrial customers cost-effective fault current limiting solutions which enable network meshing and cost-effective connection of distributed generation and intermittent renewable energy sources; while improving network stability and energy efficiency. The product accelerates connection of new generation sources and enable secure supply of power to utility networks and industrial plants. Network planners are now able to quickly design in the product with minimal changes in the network. While eliminating costly network upgrades and early retirement of fit-for-use equipment, GridON's products can save between tens and hundreds of millions of dollars in industrial and utility networks, respectively.

GridON offers two product lines to cover all market segments: (a) a pre-saturated core Fault Current Limiter (FCL) for medium-high voltage distribution and transmission networks; and (b) a solid-state Fault Current Limiting Interrupter (FCLi) for low-medium voltage DG connection and industrial applications. These cost-effective solutions significantly reduce capital expenditure and time consuming labor, required for network upgrades.

Being scalable to very high voltage and power ratings, the commercial FCL product is well-suited for distribution and transmission networks. GridON’s FCLs have been operating flawlessly in live networks since early 2013 – proving extremely reliable, easy to operate and maintain, and very effective in limiting numerous faults. GridON’s FCL is based on combining industry-standard, proven transformer technology with unique and proprietary concept of electromagnetic flux alteration on a saturated iron core. This fail-safe system responds instantaneously to faults, suppresses fault current for its entire duration, and recovers immediately following fault clearance – being always ready for consecutive faults. The FCL is the first commercially available pre-saturated fault current limiter currently available in the market. GridON has partnered with Australian based Wilson Transformer Company, a shareholder and manufacturing partner, to offer a state-of-the-art portfolio of FCL products to the market.

GridON's cost-effective, compact FCLi limits and interrupts excessive fault current and mitigates arc-flash in low-to-medium voltage networks. Designed with relatively small footprint and low price tag, the FCLi is a perfect solution for grid operators, independent power producers and industrial customers. This solid-state based product limits excessive fault current in the network before it rises to high level, and acts to interrupt it before the first current peak. By controlling excessive fault currents, the FCLi enables fast and cost-effective connection of IPPs and distributed generators. It also allows increased power capacity in industrial plants, and sale of excess generation capacity to the grid. Return on investment in an FCLi is expected withing one year.

GridON has been an active member of the IEEE/PES workgroup PC37.302 which issued an official guideline for fault current limiting technologies. GridON won prestigious awards including the 2013 UK Energy Innovation Award for the Best Energy Network Improvement, the 2012 European ACES Smart Grid and the 2011 GE ecomagination “Powering the Grid” award.
